Henry, an 8 year old boy with an inquisitive mind but a sickly nature physically, had seen his pet rabbit hop out the door, and had rushed out to catch his pet, a beautiful black bunny named Clover. In spite of the cold wind and the falling snow, Henry had chased Clover, but hadn’t been able to put his hands on the small animal. It was now several hours later, the sun had gone down, and Henry was lost and freezing. But he still hadn’t found his pet. He began to cough, a deep ugly sound. Just then he saw car lights, and something moving in front of them. Clover! He ran in front of the car, and grabbed his pet. The driver of the car slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a halt. As Henry stood there hugging the errant Clover, the driver of the car, an agitated young woman, got out, waving her arms at him. “Hey kid! What the hell do you think you’re doing?! I could have killed you!”, she screamed at him. But she softened a little when she saw him hugging the rabbit, and even more when she heard his deep cough. “Hey, kiddo, what are you and your furry friend here doing out so late in this weather? Do your folks know where you are?”, Kendra asked him. Henry shook his head, and told he’d gotten lost, looking for Clover. “Well, I’m glad you found her, but I’ll bet your folks are worried sick about you. I could take you home, if you wanted. Do you know the way? Or maybe you have a phone number I could call?”, she suggested. Henry gave her a phone number, but before she dialed it, Kendra put Henry and Clover in her car, and turned the heat up full blast. After she’d gotten Henry’s mom on the phone and explained the situation, as well as getting directions to bring Henry home, she sent her fiancé, Mason, a text, explaining her delayed arrival. She groaned inwardly, for she’d though she’d be curled up by a roaring fire with him by now, sipping mulled wine and letting him have his way with her. But this was more important…..at least for the moment. Just keep telling yourself that Kendra, she told herself silently, as she started driving. Henry’s mom met them at the door. She thanked Kendra for bring Henry and Clover home, and her relief was such that instead of being angry with her young son, she just hugged him and Clover against her tightly. She invited Kendra inside for something warm to drink, but Kendra graciously declined, saying she had to get going, as her fiancé was waiting on her. She took a picture on her phone of Henry still holding Clover, and then she was on her way. Henry, Clover, and Henry’s mom waved out the window as she drove away. Half an hour later, when she finally arrived at the mountain cabin that she and Mason were renting for the weekend, Mason had all the lights on, waiting for her. He wrapped her in his strong arms and kissed her. “So my girl did her good deed for the day, did she? Good thing that it happens to be one of the things that I love about you, else you’d be over my knee for a spanking, for worrying me.”, he teased. But the glint in his eyes told Kendra that she might very well end up there yet…..the night was young…..she let Mason draw her closer and usher her inside the warmth of the cabin. Meanwhile, Henry was being scolded by his mother. She wasn’t really angry….she just wanted to make sure that he knew not to do such a thing again. But she cautioned him that his father might not see it quite the same way. However, she needn’t have worried. When Henry’s dad got home from work, heard the story, and saw his son happily playing with Clover, all was forgiven. That night when Henry was tucked in bed, Clover was allowed to sleep with him. Henry’s parents peeked in and saw the pair sleeping….and all was right with the world.
